Oversize load, two-state permits

The situation

A semiconductor manufacturer needed a large piece of wafer processing equipment moved from a fabrication shop to its plant roughly 300 miles away. At just over 12 feet wide, the load required oversized permits in both states it would travel through, along with a pilot car for the final stretch approaching the plant.

What we did

Permits for both states were filed and confirmed before the load left the fabrication shop, a sequencing choice that avoided the load sitting at a weigh station waiting on paperwork. The route was checked against known clearance restrictions in advance, including a low railroad overpass that had previously caused problems for oversized freight on the more direct path. The route was adjusted around it before the trip began.

The pilot car met the flatbed outside the plant, per the permit's requirement, and escorted it through the final stretch of two-lane road leading to the facility. Dispatch had let the plant's receiving contact know the pilot car rendezvous point in advance, so there was no uncertainty about timing once the escort picked up the load.

The result

The receiving department confirmed they were ready for the delivery, and the unit was offloaded without the truck needing to wait on-site.
